چکیده

This paper provides an account of the syntactic and semantic representations used in Te Kaitito, a bilingual English/Māori natural language processing system. With the exception of some very simple systems (e.g. Leslie, 1998), the grammar given in Te Kaitito is the first implemented computational grammar for Māori, indeed (we believe) for any Polynesian language. It is therefore of interest to linguists studying these languages. For linguists not specifically working with Māori or Polynesian languages, it might also be interesting as an indication of the extensibility of HPSG to Polynesian languages. Section 2 outlines the criteria we are using to evaluate the role of syntactic and semantic representations in our system. Sections 3 and 4 describe the syntactic and semantic frameworks we are using, and Section 6 details some of the grammatical structures currently covered by the system.

Sentence Processing Among Native vs. Nonnative Speakers: Implications for Critical Period Hypothesis

The present study intended to investigate the processing behavior of 2 groups of L2 learners of English (high and mid in proficiency) and a group of English native speakers on English active and passive reduced relative clauses. Three sets of tasks, an offline task, and 2 online tasks were conducted. Results revealed that the high-proficiency group’s performance was the same as that of the nati...

Do Heavy-NP Shift Phenomenon and Constituent Ordering in English Cause Sentence Processing Difficulty for EFL Learners?

Heavy-NP shift occurs when speakers prefer placing lengthy or “heavy” noun phrase direct objects in the clause-final position within a sentence rather than in the post-verbal position. Two experiments were conducted in this study, and their results suggested that having a long noun phrase affected the ordering of constituents (the noun phrase and prepositional phrase) by advanced Iranian EFL le...

First Language Activation during Second Language Lexical Processing in a Sentential Context

Lexicalization-patterns, the way words are mapped onto concepts, differ from one language      to another. This study investigated the influence of first language (L1) lexicalization patterns on the processing of second language (L2) words in sentential contexts by both less proficient and more proficient Persian learners of English. The focus was on cases where two different senses of a polys...

Native-like Event-related Potentials in Processing the Second Language Syntax: Late Bilinguals

Background: The P600 brain wave reflects syntactic processes in response to different first language (L1) syntactic violations, syntactic repair, structural reanalysis, and specific semantic components. Unlike semantic processing, aspects of the second language (L2) syntactic processing differ from the L1, particularly at lower levels of proficiency. At higher L2 proficiency, syntactic violatio...
